Questions to Ask When Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Your photographer choice is arguably one of the most important aspects of your wedding. They are the ones that are going to document this special day for you, so you want to take your time making this decision. Here are some of the questions to ask potential photographers to ensure your photos will turn out exactly how you want them.

  • Is an engagement shoot included in the price of the wedding package?- Some photographers offer packages that include an engagement shoot. If you are thinking the price is a little high for your preference, negotiating an included engagement shoot could ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck!

  • How many shooters will be present on your wedding day?- It is best to have multiple photographers shooting your wedding simultaneously. This way your wedding is being documented from multiple angles and every detail and special moment is caught on camera. If a photographer is discussing only having one shooter present at your wedding, it is best to look elsewhere.

  • How many hours of shooting are included in the package?- This is an important question to ask because it helps you decide when you want your photographer present. It also allows you to plan your day keeping in mind when your photographer will be on site.

  • Is the photographer traveling to you? And if so, what are the travel fees?- Many traveling photographers charge for their travel time, hotel rooms, and any other expenses that come with traveling to your wedding. Make sure they give you a detailed list of what they are wanting covered so you can decide if covering those costs plus the cost of the event coverage itself is worth it to you.

  • Does their editing style match what you are looking for? This is arguably one of the most important questions to ask yourself and the photographer. Photographers do not change their editing styles for their clients, they merely have clients that prefer their editing style. It is important to look through the photographer’s portfolio to decide if their style meets what you are looking for. If not, it is best to find someone else who does match your aesthetic.

  • Will you receive rights to the images for printing and posting purposes or will all printing be done through the photographer?- Some photographers hold on to their images a little tighter than others. It is imperative to discuss this with the photographer prior to the wedding day to avoid mishaps.

  • Do you have liability insurance? What is the backup plan if you are unable to shoot the wedding unexpectedly?- It is always good to have your back covered just incase anything was to happen unexpectedly. You wouldn’t want to be left without a photographer for your big day!

  • How much is the deposit and when is it due?- This is a good question just so you know when things are due and how much you need to pay them!

  • Is there a cancellation policy and deposit refund?- Asking this question lets you know if you’re set in stone with this photographer and what your options are if you find someone that better fits your aesthetic.

Your photographer is a huge part of your big day, so taking your time to select the perfect one is imperative!! Happy hunting!
